America's Hand in Creating ISIS Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

Nadene Goldfoot

"It has been claimed that the CIA had ties with Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda and its "Afghan Arab" fighters when it armed Mujahideen groups against the Soviet Union during the 9 year Soviet war in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989.  Some analysts believe Bin Laden himself had security training from the CIA."  Robin Cook of UK (1997-2001) thought that throughout the 80s Osama was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan." His source for this is unclear." This is the group, al-Qaeda, that the leader of ISIS comes from.  We are now seeing much of our American weapons and vehicles in the hands of ISIS.  They always manage to get into the wrong hands.

After the American Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, many detainees from Abu Ghraib were transferred to Camp Bucca, a detention camp started in 2003 in the area of Umm Qasr, Iraq.  It held up to 20,000 prisoners.

Part of the US-Iraq security deal was to close Camp Bucca, the USA's largest prison in Iraq in 2009.  When they did this, they transferred their remaining 180 prisoners to jails in Baghdad, or were supposed to.

One of its prisoners was Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, born in Samarra, Iraq and educated in Baghdad,  PhD in education, from 2005 to 2009, now head of ISIS/IS.

Abu was an Imam in 2003 when the USA invaded Iraq because of Sadaam Hussein and the Twin Towers attack in New York City.  An Imam is  a person who leads prayers in a mosque.  It is a title held by various Muslim leaders, especially of  one succeeding Muhammad as leader of Shiite Islam such as Imam Khomeini,  though Abu is a Sunni.
  1.  He is today's leader of ISIS, the most terror-driven of all the terrorists in the Middle East, so bad that al-Qaeda is said to have excommunicated him from their group.  Religion drives him as he is a preacher of his brand of Islam.  In fact, he was the driving force behind al-Qaeda's resurgence in Syria and Iraq.   It was his goal to topple President Bashar al-Assad, an Alawite as it is not the pure Muslim Sunni religion.  His goal was to cause havoc against the Western-backed government in Baghdad.

He differs in that he is a Salafi, a follower of a fundamentalist brand of Islam.  Even Saddam Hussein would have watched him closely.  By being in Bucca for so long should mean that he was thought to be a serious threat when he went in there.  He had been al-Qaeda's point man in Qaim, Iraq, a small hamlet in the desert.  Abu Bakr/Duaa learned intimidation, torture and murder of local civilians in Qaim, says the Pentagon.  He would kidnap individuals or entire families, accuse them, pronounce sentence and then publicly execute them.  So such behavior started early and got him into an American prison camp.

Why did the USA free Abu when the camp closed on September 17, 2009?  I note that President Obama was president as on January 20, 2009 and is in his 2nd term now. He made his Cairo speech on June 4, 2009 where he had the Muslim Brotherhood in the front rows of his audience at his request.  There was the attempt to make friends with the Muslims to repair damage he thought the Bush Administration had done by entering Iraq.   One thought suggested is that Abu was one of thousands of suspected insurgents.  How can he only be suspected with a known background that is in the records?  He must have been granted amnesty as the USA started its draw down in Iraq.  Camp Bucca held thousands of prisoners without charge.  Many had allegations of torture and abuse by the US guards.

Another wilder thought is that if you watch the movie, The Usual Suspects, he was like the character of Keyser Soze, the enigmatic crimelord and may actually be several different people.

Who can we blame for letting the most dangerous man out of prison?  " On 17 September 2009 Camp Bucca Closed down Detainee Operations.

The "SUPERMAX" security row known as "Waterfront" manned by the US Navy NPDB (Naval Provisional Detainee Battalion) was in charge of the custody of the most dangerous detainees, and the last to be closed, with Compound 16 having the remaining 180 detainees either transferred to the U.S. military's Camp Cropper detention facility near Baghdad International Airport (BIAP) or to an Iraqi, Navy, and Army manned prison at Camp Taji north of Baghdad. NPDB 6 was attached to the US Army 306th Military Police Battalion, commanded by LTC Kenneth King. This was the last Navy unit to handle detainee operations in Camp Bucca."  The most dangerous were transferred to other camps, but he was freed.  Somebody sure goofed!

Another goof is in the known records about this man.  Another version is that " US Department of Defense records, al-Baghdadi was held as a "civilian internee" at Camp Bucca by US Forces-Iraq from early February 2004 until his release in early December 2004. A Combined Review and Release Board recommended the "unconditional release" of al-Baghdadi and there is no record of him being detained by the US at any other time."

USA record keeping?  The left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing?  And all this was under the Bush Administration, too.  Government agencies do seem to have their problems of oversight.

One thing in the records is that Abu's last words were " I'll see you guys in New York."

Since getting out in 2009, he has created and is the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, now called IS.  They started off as just a few terror cells on the verge of dying out and he turned them into the most dangerous militant group in the world.  His experience has been in:

"Iraqi Insurgency

Syrian Civil War:  The ISIS, (also called Dā'ash or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) made rapid military gains in Northern Syria starting in April 2013 and as of Mid 2014 controls large parts of that region, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights describes it as "the strongest group". It has imposed strict Sharia law over land that it controls. The group was, until 2014, affiliated with al-Qaeda, led by the Iraqi fighter Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and has an estimated 7,000 fighters in Syria, including many non-Syrians. It has been praised as less corrupt than other militia groups, and criticized for abusing human rights and for not tolerating non-Islamist militia groups, foreign journalists or aid workers, whose members it has expelled or imprisoned.

2014 Northern Iraq offensive"
Capturing him is worth $10 million, paid out by the USA.  "On 4 October 2011, the US State Department listed al-Baghdadi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and announced a reward of $10 million for information leading to his capture or death. Only Ayman al-Zawahiri, chief of the global al-Qaeda organization, merits a larger reward ($25 million)"

So far he has taken Mosul, Iraq's 3rd largest city.  Also he has taken Fallujah and Ramadi which gives them control of large plots of land in the north and west of the country, and is a security risk since 2012.  He's now 40 miles from Damascus. Reports are that they have slaughtered 1,700 Iraqi soldiers, fighting for the state of Iraq.  That means they killed a lot of their own Sunni Muslims.  "In the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, where ISIS has complete control, heavy-handed laws abound, including corporal and capital punishment for crimes, public floggings, mandatory prayers, and total bans of alcohol and cigarettes."

The USA has a city within the city of Baghdad populated by Embassy staff, soldiers, etc.  They now have relocated some of their staff.  "On June 17th it was reported that the Iraqi air force struck back at the militant group ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, killing more than 200 militants, Iraqi state TV reported Monday morning. The air raids took place in Saqlawiyah, northwest of Fallujah, according to a graphic run by state TV."

"On 29 June 2014, the establishment of a caliphate was announced. Al-Baghdadi was named its caliph, to be known as Caliph Ibrahim, and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was renamed The Islamic State."  He claims descent from Muhammad (570-632) so has the right to create a Caliphate, known now as IS.
